How Breathwork Helps you Stay Grounded In Times of Stress & Uncertainty
Living in a fast-paced city like Dubai has many benefits: opportunity, energy, diversity, and constant growth. But alongside these benefits, many people also experience stress, overwhelm, and uncertainty - whether from global events, work pressure, family responsibilities, or the constant movement of city life. In moments like these, one of the most powerful tools we have is our breath.
As a yoga teacher based in Dubai, I help my clients to use breathwork, or Pranayama, not just on the yoga mat. It is a simple, accessible technique that can help regulate the nervous system in any situation.
Why Breath Matters During Stress
When we feel stressed or uncertain, our nervous system shifts into a “fight or flight” response. Our breathing becomes shallow and fast, our heart rate increases, as the body prepares to react to perceived “danger”. While this response is useful in emergencies, modern stressors such as deadlines, emails, traffic, and financial worries, can keep the body in this heightened state for long periods of time, which has a negative impact on our overall wellbeing.
Conscious breathing helps signal to the body that it is safe, and that it can relax. Slow, steady breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest and digest” state. This shift can help reduce anxiety, calm the mind, and help to regulate our emotional state, as well as ease physical panic symptoms.
Breathwork as a Daily Regulation Tool
One of the reasons Pranayama, or breathwork, is so powerful is its accessibility. You do not need a yoga mat, special clothing, or a quiet studio. You can practice breathing techniques in your car before work, at your desk between meetings, or at home before bed. You’ll notice after even a few minutes of intentional breathing how you feel different - more present and in control.
Over time, regular breathwork can help:
Reduce feelings of anxiety and overwhelm
Improve focus and mental clarity
Support better sleep
Improve physical tension in the body e.g. tight chest, tense shoulders
Increase emotional resilience during uncertain times
A Simple Breathwork Practice You Can Try
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try this simple breathing exercise, known as box breathing. It’s known as box breathing because each part of the breath is the same length - you can even imagine a box forming with your breath, when you close your eyes.
Sit comfortably, preferably with your feet on the ground. Close your eyes if you feel safe to.
Place one hand on your belly and one on your chest, to help you connect to your body
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four, feeling the belly and ribs expand
Pause and hold the breath for four counts
Exhale gently through the nose or mouth for four counts
Repeat this for five to ten rounds, or until you feel calmer and more relaxed
Pranayama, or breathwork, in yoga
When many people think of yoga, they think of physical postures (known as asana). While asana is a part of yoga, it is only one aspect of a much deeper practice. There are eight limbs in yoga - asana being one, and another being Pranayama, the practice of conscious breathing. In Sanskrit, prana means life force or vital energy, and ayama means expansion or regulation. Together, pranayama refers to techniques that help regulate and expand the flow of energy through intentional breathing.
In many modern yoga classes, pranayama is woven into the practice through slow, steady breathing that accompanies movement, for example in Vinyasa yoga. Teachers may guide students to inhale while expanding or lifting, and exhale while folding or grounding. Pranayama practices may also be offered at the beginning or end of a class to help students transition into a calmer, more mindful state, or to reconnect with themselves, moving beyond the physical aspects of yoga and into a more meditative experience.
Summary
In times of uncertainty, we often look outside ourselves for solutions. But sometimes the most effective support is already within us, and this is something I help my students to access - your breath and the meditative state we’re able to achieve using it, is always available to you.
With just a few minutes of conscious breathing each day, you can begin to regulate stress, calm the mind, and reconnect with a sense of balance, even in the middle of a busy Dubai lifestyle.
